1,3-Dimercaptopropane CAS#109-80-8
1,3-Dimercaptopropane is typically a colorless, transparent liquid at room temperature. Due to its susceptibility to oxidation and other environmental factors, it may gradually develop a slight yellow coloration after extended storage.
Under normal temperature and atmospheric pressure conditions, it remains in a liquid state with good fluidity. Its density is slightly higher than that of water and it is slightly soluble in water. It exhibits good miscibility with various organic solvents, including ethanol, ether, benzene, chloroform, and other similar solvents.

Product Usage
1,3-Propanedithiol is widely used as a chemical reagent in the synthesis of thioketals and thioacetals. It also serves as a flavoring agent and acts as an important precursor for preparing cyclic dithioacetal derivatives (1,3-dithianes) from carbonyl compounds.
It can participate in the synthesis of diiron propanedithiolate hexacarbonyl through reaction with triiron dodecacarbonyl. In addition, 1,3-propanedithiol is commonly applied for the protection of aldehydes and ketones by forming reversible dithiane structures. It can also interact with metal ions to generate stable chelate rings, making it valuable in coordination chemistry and related applications.
