Products Description of Potassium Phosphate CAS#778-53-2

Potassium phosphate is a reagent with excellent buffering capacity and is widely used as a pH-regulating agent. It is commonly applied as a component in various microbial culture media and phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solutions.

Potassium phosphate exists in several forms, including monobasic, dibasic, and tribasic forms (K₃PO₄). Most neutral pH potassium phosphate buffer systems are prepared by combining different proportions of monobasic and dibasic potassium phosphate according to the required pH conditions.

Gomori buffer, one of the most commonly used phosphate buffer systems, is composed of a mixture of monobasic dihydrogen phosphate and dibasic monohydrogen phosphate. By adjusting the ratio of these phosphate salts, buffer solutions with effective buffering performance can be prepared within the pH range of 5.8 to 8.0. Potassium phosphate features outstanding buffering capacity and excellent water solubility, making it suitable for a wide range of biochemical and laboratory applications.

Potassium phosphate CAS#7778-53-2

Potassium phosphate is widely used as a fertilizer and food additive. It is also applied in optical modulators and nonlinear optical applications, such as second-harmonic generation (SHG). In organic synthesis, it participates in the phase-transfer catalyzed conversion of corresponding vicinal dibromo compounds into acetylenes through double dehydrobromination. Additionally, it can be used as an effective reagent for the oxidative coupling of thiols to form disulfides.

Potassium phosphate tribasic is a reagent with excellent buffering capacity and is extensively utilized in molecular biology, biochemistry, and chromatography. It is used for the extraction of keratohyalin proteins from bovine tissues and for research on the effects of freeze-thaw cycles on the stability of proteins susceptible to conformational changes. In the food industry, it functions as a food additive with emulsifying, foaming, and whipping properties.

Potassium phosphate tribasic has also been applied in various research fields, including:

  • Serving as a component of lysis buffers for protein isolation from Gram-positive bacteria.

  • Acting as a reagent in the scalable synthesis and post-functional modification of NU-1000 mesoporous metal-organic frameworks.

  • Being used in the preparation of highly purified plasma membranes from Lilium davidii or Oryza sativa.
