Product Application of 2'-Fucosyllactose CAS#41263-94-9
Breastfeeding is considered the optimal approach for infant nutrition. Natural human breast milk from most women contains 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL), although infants are not yet able to synthesize fucosylated human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) on their own.
2'-FL is one of the major oligosaccharides found in human milk but is absent from bovine milk. Currently, commercially produced 2'-FL provides a way to supplement this important component in infant nutrition products.
As a prebiotic, 2'-FL supports beneficial intestinal bacteria, which metabolize it into short-chain fatty acids. These metabolites serve as an energy source for colon cells and help promote sodium and water absorption. Therefore, conventional infant formulas used as breast milk substitutes may lack this naturally occurring component that is abundant in human milk.
Most infants are naturally exposed to 2'-FL through breastfeeding but not to 2'-FL produced through alternative manufacturing processes. Commercially produced 2'-FL, such as Jennewein 2'-FL, is chemically equivalent to the naturally occurring 2'-FL found in human breast milk.
