Products Description of Neodymium Nitrate Hexahydrate CAS#16454-60-7
Neodymium nitrate hexahydrate has the chemical formula Nd(NO₃)₃·6H₂O and a molecular weight of 438.35. It exists in two forms, α and β, with a phase transition temperature of approximately 22°C. This compound is highly soluble in water and ethanol. Through vacuum dehydration, it can form anhydrous salts, while strong heating causes decomposition. It also readily reacts with other nitrates to form various complex salts, such as 3Mg(NO₃)₂·2Nd(NO₃)₃·24H₂O, 3Mn(NO₃)₂·2Nd(NO₃)₃·24H₂O, and 3Ni(NO₃)₂·2Nd(NO₃)₃·24H₂O.
Neodymium nitrate solution is an acidic aqueous solution with a purple-red appearance. Due to its strong acidity, it can react intensely with carbonate-based materials and may increase the corrosion of refractory materials. Therefore, it should not be directly added to batch materials and is usually premixed with sodium carbonate before use.
As a glass coloring agent, neodymium nitrate solution does not require special melting conditions for glass production. With increasing addition amounts, the glass color can gradually change from light blue to blue-purple under fluorescent light and display a blue-purple red tone under sunlight, also known as rose red. Adding a small amount of selenium powder can enhance the red coloration, especially at night, helping maintain the attractive purple-red appearance of neodymium glass. Meanwhile, it can reduce the required amount of Nd₂O₃, thereby lowering glass production costs. Studies have demonstrated that neodymium nitrate solution is a technically feasible and economically beneficial raw material for glass colorants when premixed with soda ash.
