Copper(II) nitrate trihydrate is a white powder that readily absorbs moisture from the air and is highly soluble in water, with a solubility of approximately 45 g at 0°C. It can be recrystallized by adding concentrated nitric acid. When heated to redness, it decomposes into nitrogen oxides and copper oxide, and it can also be decomposed by hydrochloric acid.
Common forms of copper nitrate hydrates include copper nitrate hexahydrate (Cu(NO₃)₂·6H₂O) and copper nitrate trihydrate (Cu(NO₃)₂·3H₂O). The hexahydrate appears as blue crystals with a relative density of 2.074. At 26.4°C, it loses three molecules of crystal water and converts into the trihydrate form, while further decomposition occurs at 65°C to form basic copper salts.
Copper nitrate trihydrate is a dark blue triangular prism crystal with a molecular weight of 241.60, a melting point of 114.5°C, and a density of 2.32 g/cm³. It is readily soluble in water and ethanol; its concentrated solution appears green, while the dilute solution is light blue. The compound easily deliquesces and dissolves in its own crystal water at 114.5°C. When heated to 170°C, it loses nitric acid and forms basic copper nitrate, and at around 200°C it decomposes into copper oxide.
As an oxidizing compound, copper nitrate should be handled carefully as it may cause combustion or explosion when mixed with carbon, sulfur, or other combustible materials. It is widely used in copper plating, pesticide production, enamel manufacturing, dye preparation, and other industrial applications. Copper nitrate can be prepared through the reaction of copper oxide or copper metal with dilute nitric acid.
