Phosphorous acid (H₃PO₃) is an inorganic compound that appears as colorless to pale yellow, ice-like crystals. It is highly soluble in water and ethanol. When exposed to air, it gradually oxidizes to orthophosphoric acid. Upon heating to 180°C, it decomposes into orthophosphoric acid and phosphine. Phosphorous acid has a melting point of 73°C and a boiling point of 200°C. It is mainly used as a raw material in the manufacture of plastic stabilizers and is also applied in the production of synthetic fibers and phosphites.
