Titanium tetrachloride is the most significant titanium halide and serves as an important raw material for the production of titanium sponge and titanium dioxide through the chloride process. Pure titanium tetrachloride is a colorless, transparent, high-density, non-conductive liquid with the chemical formula TiCl₄ and a relative density of 1.726. It has a melting point of -25°C and a boiling point of 136.4°C.

Titanium tetrachloride has a strong pungent acidic odor and is highly susceptible to hydrolysis, producing white fumes when exposed to humid air. It reacts with water and decomposes, while also being soluble in alcohol and concentrated hydrochloric acid, and miscible with chloroform and carbon tetrachloride.

It is produced by mixing titanium dioxide, carbon powder, and maltose into a compact mixture, followed by coking and chlorination with chlorine gas at temperatures above 600°C or by using chlorinating agents such as carbon tetrachloride.
