Lithium silicate is a water-soluble silicate that appears as an odorless, tasteless, transparent liquid. It is soluble in water and alkaline solutions but insoluble in alcohols and other organic solvents.
Because lithium ions have a much smaller ionic radius than sodium and potassium ions, aqueous lithium silicate solutions exhibit several unique properties. Similar to sodium water glass, lithium silicate reacts chemically with acids to form a silica gel.
Lithium silicate is produced by melting lithium carbonate and silicon dioxide at high temperatures. It can be used to calibrate thermoelectric elements such as thermocouples.
The aqueous solution of lithium silicate offers excellent water resistance, high-temperature resistance, and resistance to repeated wet-dry cycles.
