Industrial solid sodium silicate is typically a colorless or slightly colored transparent or translucent glassy solid, which may appear light blue, turquoise, sky blue, yellow-green, or other shades depending on its impurity content. When the impurity content is very low, anhydrous solid sodium silicate has a colorless and transparent glassy appearance. As the impurity content increases, the glass body becomes increasingly colored. Iron oxide impurities may give it a light brown, dark brown, or even black appearance, with the color becoming deeper as the modulus decreases.
Liquid sodium silicate is generally a colorless to slightly light gray, transparent or translucent viscous liquid.
